Artisan Highlight: Ipek Akdal

We are incredibly honored to work with Ipek and are excited to share her creations with you. A mathematician at heart, Ipek is extremely focused, detail oriented and her bags are perfect every time. As we say in Turkish, ellerinize sağlık (may your hands always be healthy), Ipek! We love working with you.

Q: Can you tell us a little more about who you are and where you are from?

My name is Ipek Akdal and I was born and raised in Izmir, Türkiye. In University, I graduated from the Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics. After graduation I was married and had two sons, who are now 32 and 28 years old.

Q: When and why did you start weaving, how did you learn?

I started knitting when I was 7 years old and learned from the elders in my family.

Q: Have you been knitting your whole life?

After I had children, I gave private mathematics lessons at home and I still continue giving lessons. So, while I have not always had time, I always loved to knit and crochet. During he pandemic I started trying and making bags, and practicing new styles and techniques. Over time I have improved myself.

Q: Which type of bags do you like to knit the most?

I love to use kağıt (paper rope) because it is the most difficult thing to make. I enjoy spending my free time trying new bag styles.
