The textile manufacturing industry has long been known for its significant impact on the environment. From the extraction of raw materials to the manufacturing processes and the disposal of products, the production of textiles often involves high energy consumption, water pollution, and the emission of greenhouse gases.
The status quo
The production of textiles, including bath towels, has historically contributed to environmental degradation in various ways. Firstly, the extraction of raw materials such as cotton, which is commonly used in towel production, often involves the use of harmful pesticides and excessive water consumption. These practices can lead to soil degradation, water scarcity, and contamination of ecosystems. Additionally, the manufacturing processes used to transform raw materials into finished products often require substantial energy consumption and contribute to air and water pollution through the discharge of chemical waste. This combination of factors makes the textile industry one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions and environmental pollution globally.
What we’re doing about it
At Pine & Palm Home, we recognize the urgent need for change and are committed to reducing our environmental footprint. Every business decision we make has environmental impact at the forefront. From the start, we knew we wanted to be carbon neutral and through extensive research, innovation, and collaboration with sustainable partners, we have implemented measures to become a carbon-neutral company. Our focus extends to the production of our bath towels, Turkish peshtemal beach towels, hooded baby towels and bath mats, ensuring that every step of the manufacturing process — to delivery at your doorstep — aligns with our commitment to sustainability.
We work with like-minded partners
We prioritize partnering with small, family-run Turkish manufacturers that share our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. These manufacturers have demonstrated their dedication to sustainable practices through various initiatives. They carefully select high-quality, sustainably sourced materials, ensuring that their products meet the highest standards of environmental stewardship. They prioritize water and energy efficiency throughout the manufacturing process to minimize resource consumption. These manufacturers hold certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which guarantee that their products are free from harmful substances and produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
We offset all carbon emissions
As part of our unwavering commitment to fighting our global climate crisis, we have taken significant steps to offset all carbon emissions associated the production of all of our products. We partner with
CarbonFund.org, a leading nonprofit organization specializing in carbon offsetting programs. Through this collaboration, we actively contribute to projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable practices. By purchasing carbon credits from
CarbonFund.org, we effectively neutralize our carbon footprint.
Purchasing carbon credits involves financially supporting verified projects that have undergone rigorous assessment and meet recognized standards for emission reductions or removals. Each carbon credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide (or its equivalent) that has been prevented or removed from the atmosphere. By purchasing these credits, we can effectively fund the continuation or expansion of projects that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Soma Wind Farm Project III: we currently reinvest our carbon credits in this large scale renewable energy project located in the Manisa Province of Turkey, 200km from where we produce our products. This project involves the installation of 50 wind turbines which deliver electricity to Turkey’s national power grid.
We care about packaging
We understand the importance of minimizing our environmental footprint throughout the entire lifecycle of our products. To that end, we prioritize sustainable shipping practices and the use of eco-friendly materials. We work closely with our manufacturers, requesting minimal plastic poly bagging during the shipping process. And when we ship to you, we only use recycled shipping materials that can be reused or recycled and we don’t use unnecessary poly bagging.
Our products require less energy
We want to create products that you love, are excited to use, and take less energy to keep looking great. All of our towels can (and should) be washed on eco and quick wash cycles and thrown in a short dry cycle. Or, better yet, air dry your towels! They dry on their own in under and hour. Not only does this save you water and energy, but it saves time. So you can do things much more fun than washing laundry.
And, this is just the start. We’re on the waitlist to become Carbon Neutral Certified and hope to start our path to becoming a B Corp this year.
By taking these measures, we ensure that our sustainability efforts extend to every aspect of our operations, from manufacturing to delivery, providing you with a truly eco-conscious product that we can feel good about.
